Description
Half-day tour only which will drive you to the source of the Sorgue river, in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. This source is the most important resurgence in France with an annual flow of 700 millions of cubic meters. You will wander along the clear water of the Sorgue in this village stuck in the valley, hence its original name of Vaucluse (“Vallis Clausa” = “enclosed valley” in Latin), then chosen as the name of the Vaucluse Department created in 1793. Then, you will roam in the streets of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, little town in which the Sorgue river divides into several branches, giving L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue its nickname : “Venice of the Comtat”, with its canals and its waterwheels used at one time for the productions of the paper, silk, wheat mills, etc. Finally, you will go down to the Caves of Thouzon, discovered in 1902, in which water from a tributary of the Sorgue river seeped in, the Réal de Montclar.
